recessed drapery & shading profiles
Window covering projects are like snowflakes, no 2 are alike. With todays contemporary & modern designs, the cleaner the treatment the happier the client! Recessed shading & drapery pockets can be integrated into the architecture of a building to provide discreet and efficient window shading systems. These pockets house the shading mechanisms (such as roller shades, blinds, or curtains) within the ceiling or wall, hidden from view when the shades are not in use. The system’s
seamless integration allows for aesthetic and functional benefits in both residential and commercial spaces.
Of course there is plenty of planning involved early on in the design stage. Position & direction of ceiling joists, beams & rafters must be considered when incorporating shade pockets. Spray foam insulation also affects positining of these shading pockets. This means that the actual shading system (product & design) must be done early on to ensure that the actual product dimensions fit the pockets that have been installed. Provisions for backing must also be considered. Most common recessed shading products used are roller shades & drapery.

blindspace / tracktrim®
One product that we have come to appreciate is TrackTrim® by Blindspace which is a perfect fit solution to recess drapery systems from companies such as Somfy, Lutron, Crestron. When drapery tracks are installed, the result is a minimalist design where drapery tracks fully blend in flush with the ceiling. Tracks and end-sets are available with skim coat flanges or with chamfered edges for bending when curved track systems are required. The track and end-set are then plastered in flush with the ceiling to form a mini pocket. Tracks and end-sets can be emulsion painted to perfectly match the ceiling if desired.
For roller style shading systems, Blindspace® C & S Series boxes can be made to any size to conceal all types of roller shades, achieving minimal visual impact. The box must be installed during construction with the space accessible for roller shade installation once the room is completed. It features the patented Blindspace® Safety Hinge that secures the cover in place and can be installed in any direction, together with side boxes to hide roller shade side channels and/or guide wires.
Custom C Series boxes are used for very large roller shades, double roller shades, gable roller shades and skylight roller shading systems. C Series boxes can also be installed to future proof buildings to have the option to install concealed roller shades later on.

Mechoshade shading pocket collections can accomodate from the smallest to the largest of shading systems. They can be stacked, layered & / or combined to suit the most complex of shading installations. For larger systems we offer a full range of standard, expandable & customizable pockets which includes single & double roller shade pockets as well as a full line of closure panels & accessories if a drywall pocket is more desired.
The standard rough in dimensions for these pockets is 6″ x 6″ however the width & height of the roller shade as well as the fabric selected all affect the final roll up diameter of the system. And dont forget that the electrical connection may also need to be made inside these pockets. Based on this, its ALWAYS best to plan ahead.

Advantages of Shading Pockets
Aesthetic Appeal
Recessed shading pockets provide a sleek, modern look by concealing the shading mechanisms, such as roller blinds or curtains, within the walls or ceiling. This creates a clean, minimalistic appearance, eliminating visible hardware like brackets or valances that can detract from the room’s design. The system integrates seamlessly with the architecture, allowing for a polished and visually appealing space.
Maximized Window Views
Since recessed shading pockets conceal the shade mechanisms when not in use, they allow for unobstructed views of the outdoors. This is particularly important in spaces where natural light and scenic views are a priority. The shades are neatly hidden away, enhancing the openness and transparency of the room when the shading is retracted.
Improved Energy Efficiency
Perforated recessed shading pockets can be used to help regulate indoor temperatures by allowing heat gain from outside to be released into the ceiling plennum.
Space Efficiency
In areas where wall or window space is limited, recessed shading pockets are an excellent solution. By concealing the shading mechanism in the ceiling or wall, they free up valuable space around windows, making them ideal for smaller rooms or areas where traditional blinds or curtains might interfere with furniture placement.
Reduced Maintenance
Because the shading system is recessed and protected within the wall or ceiling, it is less prone to dust & dirt which results in less cleaning compared to traditional surface-mounted blinds or curtains.
Noise Reduction
Recessed shading pockets can also contribute to noise reduction. The added layer of material (whether fabric or other shading materials) can help dampen external sounds, improving the acoustics within a space and creating a quieter, more comfortable environment.
Long-Term Value
The discreet and high-quality nature of recessed shading systems often adds long-term value to a property. This is especially true in high-end residential or commercial projects where aesthetics, privacy, and energy efficiency are prioritized. As such, recessed shading pockets can be seen as a valuable investment in the property’s functionality and market appeal.
The Point:
Recessed shading pockets offer a wide range of benefits, from aesthetic enhancement and space-saving to energy efficiency and increased privacy. By integrating shading systems into the building’s architecture, these systems provide a seamless, elegant solution for managing natural light and controlling indoor environments. Whether in a residential home, office, or commercial space, recessed shading pockets elevate both the function and look of a room, offering long-term advantages in terms of both comfort and design.
Of course these ALL need to be planned for at the design / framing stage and installed prior to drywall. Electrical considerations also need to be factored in.
