A definite designer classic, shutters are a timeless way to add drama and elegance to any room in your home or office. With the sleek lines, classic styles, and range of products that are available today, even the most discriminating tastes are guaranteed to be satisfied. Materials such as Wood, Aluminum, Polyester fabrics and PVC are now used to produce distinctive slat profiles that offer natural beauty and enhance any décor. Shutters are ideal for almost any window regardless of the elevation. As with most window coverings, materials now include some form of UV inhibitors such as topical coatings, Varathanes, or fabric protectors to prevent yellowing in situations where there is direct exposure to sunlight. In areas of high humidity, both PVC and Aluminum shutters can be used without any concern over warping, whereas wood and fabric shutters (see “Alouette” shades) in the closed position can increase the insulation value of a window.
When determining how to treat a window, (or multiple windows), there are numerous configurations that can be used, from bi-fold to bi-pass, café style to double hung, and one way stack or center split. One thing for sure; there is more than one solution even when addressing challenging windows such as angles or arches. Large windows can be treated by using multiple hinged panels whereas bi-pass track systems are ideal for patio doors. If both privacy and natural light are desired, panels can be split into upper and lower sections by way of a mid rail, thereby permitting the top section to be opened bringing in light while closing the lower section for total privacy. Garden doors can also be treated easily by adding a frame around the perimeter of the shutter.
Note: The maximum panel size varies according to configuration and from product to product. Most PVC and Wood panels can be made up to (28” - 30” in width) where aluminum panels can go to 50” wide providing the mounting framework will carry the load. The new “Alouette” shade is actually a polyester fabric louver produced in a shutter profile and made to work in a horizontal blind system. This new innovative product can be made in widths up to the 84” and heights up to 120”.
