GiCor has the largest selection of Motorized Blinds Calgary / Motorized Window Coverings Calgary has to offer!

Motorization of window coverings can be defined as a means to control window coverings using shading motors which are powered from various sources and controlled using remotes, wall switches, tablets, computers and third party controls such as home automation or sophisticated building management systems.

Whether you are renovating, building a new home or in the planning stages of a commercial office space, motorized window coverings are quickly becoming an essential part of new construction today. Windows are often being manufactured larger and designed as floor to ceiling curtain walls in most new building envelopes. More attention is now being paid to view, maximizing daylight as well as energy conservation as it relates to heating and cooling of the space. In each instance, window coverings / shading systems must be properly designed to address light, glare and heat control, all the while maximizing the comfort level within.

Screen Shot 2016-06-23 at 3.21.59 PMTo address this growing segment, many suppliers have been developing both innovative and affordable products for the marketplace. Companies such as Hunter Douglas have developed their own control systems including hardwired systems for integration with home automation and lighting controls systems as well as their new Powerview Technology which can be adapted to most of their products and uses RF (radio frequency) as it’s control platform. In addition, the launch of the Hunter Douglas Powerview HUB allows users to control Hunter Douglas Powerview motorized window coverings using their smart phone as well as integration with home automation systems. These products are outlined in the table below. Other manufacturers such as Somfy have developed motors that can be retrofit into many of the major product lines facilitating even larger shades and offer a broader range of control options including Somfy’s own MyLink system. Most of these new motorized systems can be integrated with lighting controls or home automation systems and can be controlled by a number of devices such as remotes and switches, sun and heat sensors, timers, computers and tablets, as well as smart phones, touch panels and other android devices.

Qmotion is the new kid on the block, introducing their new line of battery and low voltage shading systems combined with technology from the overhead door industry. This product line can also be controlled using many of the devices noted above. Roller shades in general have become the most popular product line, mainly because they are both versatile and affordable, can be made to fit extremely large windows and offer the widest range of motors and controls to suit any application. Other products such as the Hunter Douglas Silhouette, Vignette and Duette (honeycomb shades) are also popular but tend to be more expensive in general. Most drapery hardware can now also be motorized with the same electronics available to integrate with similar control systems as available for blinds.

Power requirements for each type of motor can vary from product to product & brand to brand so PLAN EARLY! Anything from line voltage (110 volts), low voltage (12 to 24 volts), battery (up to 18 volts) and solar powered (up to 18 volts) is now available. Each has its own benefit and associated wiring requirements. Depending on the product category, overall window dimensions and how you would like to control the motor(s), it is relatively simple to determine the best solution using a process of elimination. Another words, once you have chosen the product type, size and control system, GiCor can determine the best power solution for your project. To avoid any disappointments down the road, we recommended that you evaluate this scope earlier in the construction process rather than later!
